Helping you find balance when dizziness or vertigo takes over.
Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy that supports people experiencing dizziness, vertigo, or balance problems – often caused by conditions affecting the inner ear (the vestibular system).
Why am I feeling dizzy?
Dizziness and balance issues can come from many causes, but one of the most common is a problem within the vestibular system—the part of your inner ear responsible for helping your brain understand your body’s movement, head position, and sense of spatial awareness.
When this system is disrupted due to injury, infection, or illness, the brain receives confusing or incorrect signals.
This can lead to:
- Vertigo (A spinning sensation)
- Dizziness with specific head movements (e.g., rolling over in bed, looking up)
- Dizziness following a concussion or head injury
- Balance problems and fear of falling
- Visual disturbances
- Nausea or motion sensitivity
- Motion sensitivity (e.g., while driving, watching busy TV screens)
- In some cases, hearing changes
Conditions we can treat:
- Vertigo and balance problems from inner ear infections (Vestibular neuritis or Labyrinthitis)
- BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
- Vestibular Hypofunction including Ototoxicity
- Cervicogenic Dizziness (dizziness from the neck)
- Persistent postural and perceptual dizziness (PPPD)
- Bilateral vestibular loss
- General imbalance and deconditioning
- Falls balance impairments
What can I expect during my session:
You’ll receive a comprehensive assessment and an evidence-based treatment plan tailored to reduce your symptoms. Your session may focus on improving:
- Dizziness and sense of disorientation
- Vertigo
- Headaches
- Balance problems
- Motion sensitivity, nausea and vomiting
- Visual disturbances
The first step is a comprehensive assessment by our specialist-trained physiotherapist Molly Bettridge, which involves:
- Detailed History:
Understanding your symptoms, triggers (like rolling over in bed), and medicalbackground. - Positional Testing:
Using specific movements (like the Dix-Hallpike test) to observe your eye movements (nystagmus), which helps us accurately diagnose the affected part of your inner ear. - Balance & Vision Checks:
Assessing your gaze stability, balance control, and gait to identify all
contributing factors.
